Like many, I always had the ambition to do my higher studies in abroad. But, where should I go? The USA, Canada, Australia, Germany have always been the first priority among international students — not just for their global reputation, but the quality of education with justifiable tuition fees, scholarship opportunities, and the options when the students complete their study. These are the countries that attract more students from all over the world which eventually makes these countries an excellent place for holistic education. The students get the chance to meet students from all over the world and learn from them, let it be in the classroom or college/university corridor.

However, in my case, I choose Canada and Durham Region over anything else! In this blog, I am writing about the wide range of options that international students have in the Durham Region!

Oops! I forgot to give my introduction. My name is M. S. Rayhan Akond (Rayhan Sunny in Social Media) and I’m a Master in Information Technology Security student at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology/UOIT/Ontario Tech University (https://ontariotechu.ca/). In addition, I’m an Ambassador, an International Orientation Leader, and a Digital Community Crew of this university.

  • Why did I choose Canada over other countries?

– Globally recognized education system, justifiable tuition fees, quality of living, and most importantly opportunities once I finish my education.

  • Why did I choose a university which is located in the Durham Region (Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Carlington, Scugog, Uxbridge, Brock)?

– My first priority was to study at a university that is pretty close to Toronto, if not in Toronto, and offers a degree according to my interest with an affordable tuition fee! Note that Durham Region (Pickering) is just 35 and 30 minutes Uber drive from the Pearson International Airport and CN Tower respectively, and is an integral part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Yes! It is that much close! We can literally see the CN Tower from this region! The reason behind choosing one of the best multicultural cities’ – Toronto – vicinity is that I don’t have to relocate myself after my graduation to find jobs and gain valuable Canadian working experience.

  • Some facts about Durham Region?

– Durham Region is one of Canada’s fastest-growing economic communities and is made up of the cities of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Carlington, Scugog, Uxbridge, Brock. However, Oshawa is the most happening place out of these and is a city of 2 reputed universities and 1 college.

  • What are the universities and college in Oshawa?

Ontario Tech University. With the motto of Tech with Conscience, it is one of the fastest-growing, modern, and forward-looking universities in Canada. This university mainly focuses on Engineering degrees, however, offers some degrees related to Business, Humanities, and Life Science as well. Trent University. This university has 2 branches. Its main branch located in Peterborough, Ontario, and the other one is in Oshawa. The branch in Oshawa offers some limited Undergraduate and Graduate level degrees. For more information, please visit – https://www.trentu.ca/durham-gta

Durham College. It is considered as one of the best colleges in Canada, thus, attracts students from all over the world. It offers a lot of degrees from where a student can choose according to his/her interest. For more information, please visit – https://durhamcollege.ca/

  • Why did I choose Ontario Tech University?

– No sooner had I finished my Undergraduate degree in Bangladesh, I was looking for a university in Canada and close to Toronto that offers a Master’s degree in something related to Cyber Security. I found a few options, however, I chose Ontario Tech University because it offers this degree with fewer tuition cost compared to the other universities located in Toronto and it offers good quality of education as well.

  • Do I recommend Durham Region for livings?

– It is one of the best places to live in. It is quiet, calm, clean, and student-friendly. Compared to Toronto, the house rent is less but has access to Toronto anytime.
